Yves Saint Laurent : The Retrospective
2012-04-25미국 덴버 아트 뮤지엄(Denver Art Museum)은 세계에서 가장 사랑 받는 패션 아티스트 중 한 사람인
이브 생 로랑(Yves Saint Laurent, 1936~2008)의 50주년을 기념하는 회고전을 개최하였습니다.

패션 역사학자이자 작가인 플로렌스 뮐러(Florence Müller)가 큐레이팅하고 나탈리 크리니에르(Nathalie Crinière)가
디자인한 이번 전시는 YSL 작품을 통한 아티스트의 작품 세계와 문화적인 영향 등을 경험 할 수 있도록 하였다고 하는데요.
(이브 생 로랑은 1982년에 뉴욕에서 생존 디자이너로서는 처음으로 25주년 기념 회고전을 열었으며,
파리 퐁피두 센터에서 40주년 기념 패션쇼를 열기도 하였습니다.)

“저는 패션을 예술이라고 생각하지 않습니다.”
이브 생 로랑과 오랜 시간 비지니스. 그리고 로맨틱 파트너였던 피에르 베르제(Pierre Bergé)는
전시의 오프닝에서 다소 의아한 말을 하였습니다.
(아마도, 패션과 예술이 만났을 때 보여지는 YSL의 멋진 작업물을 염두하고 이렇게 말한 듯 합니다.)
상징적인 “파리 로즈(Paris rose)” 사틴 리본(satin bow)으로 싸여진 여성의 뒷모습 이미지 앞에서 말이죠.
이미지는 이브 생 로랑의 작품처럼 생동감 넘치면서도 얌전하게 느껴졌습니다.
“아마도 그렇게 말하면 안되겠지요. 사실 패션이 존재하기 위해서 그리고 살아남기 위해서 아티스트가 필요합니다.
그리고 이브 생 로랑은 그 아티스트였습니다.”
라고 말을 이었습니다.
아티스트로서의 삶을 살았던 이브 생 로랑의 이번 전시에서는 200점의 오트 쿠튀르(haute-couture)
작품들과 필름, 사진, 드로잉 등 문화적, 미학적 영감을 알 수 있는 작품들로 구성 되었는데요.
전시의 시작부터 끝까지 낮은 조명이 퍼지면서 개인적으로 매우 친한 (그리고 아주 멋진) 친구의
옷장을 천천히 들여다 보는 느낌을 전해 주도록 구성하였다고 합니다.

(위 드레스는 1967년 이브 생 로랑과 우정을 나눈 여배우 까뜨린느 드뇌브를 뮤즈로 삼아 영화 세브린느를 위한 작품입니다.)
실제로 이브 생 로랑은 예술과 많은 교류를 한 것으로도 유명한데요. 1966년 앤디 워홀(Andy Warhol)의 영향을 받아 팝 아트
의상을 선보이거나, 1969년 조각가 클로드 라란느와 함께 ‘가슴’ 조각과 ‘허리’ 조각을 단 드레스 들을 발표하기도 하였습니다.
이후 1979년 피카소, 1980년 기욤 아폴리네르, 장콕토, 루이 아라공, 1981년 마티스 * 페르낭 레제, 1987년 데이비드 호크니,
1988년 반 고흐 등 많은 협업 작품과 오마주 작품을 선보였습니다.
소개글에 의하면 이 회고전을 보고난 뒤 아마 패션과 아트, 디자인의
교차점이 무엇인지에 대한 궁금증은 없어 질 것이라 하네요.^^
늘 새로운 접근을 위해 부단히 노력했던 이브 생 로랑의 ‘작품’들을 살짝 엿볼까요?
